Selection criteria examples that get the nod

STAR examples for five of the most common criteria in Australian government, health and education job ads. Use them to see what good looks like, then let us write yours from your own experience.

Teamwork

Example: Registered nurse going for a unit manager role

"Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team"

Health panels want proof you can work across professions, not just with your own team.

  • Names who you worked with, not just "the team"
  • Shows you taking the lead without being the boss
  • A measurable result for patients

As a Registered Nurse on a 28-bed medical ward, I work alongside doctors, physiotherapists and social workers every shift. Patients were often staying an extra day because discharge plans were made too late. I suggested a ten-minute morning huddle where each discipline flagged patients likely to go home within 48 hours, and I offered to run it for the first month. Within three months, the ward's average stay dropped by half a day, and the huddle is now part of our standard routine.

Communication

Example: APS 4 officer going for an APS 5 role

"Highly developed written and verbal communication skills"

Most roles need both. The strongest answers show you adjusting how you communicate for the people you're talking to.

  • Covers written and verbal in one example
  • Shows you thinking about your audience
  • The result proves it worked

As a Client Service Officer, I answer complex questions from the public by phone and in writing. After a policy change, I noticed many callers were confused by our standard letter, which used terms most people didn't understand. I drafted a plain-English version, tested it with two colleagues and my team leader, then presented it at our team meeting with examples of the calls it would prevent. The new letter was adopted across our section, and repeat calls on the topic fell by around a third over the next two months.

Customer service

Example: Retail manager moving into a council role

"Demonstrated experience delivering high-quality customer service, including managing complaints"

Panels look for calm, empathy and follow-through. Private sector experience counts just as much.

  • Shows the steps you took, in order
  • Balances empathy with fixing the problem
  • Turns one complaint into a better process

As Assistant Manager at a busy homewares store, I handle escalated complaints for a team of 18. One customer arrived upset after her delivery was missed twice, the day before a family event. I listened, apologised and checked our system while she waited. The order had gone to an old address, so I arranged a same-day pick-up from our warehouse and had it ready for her that afternoon. She thanked me in a review that named me, and I used the case to retrain the team on checking delivery details at checkout.

Leading others

Example: Classroom teacher going for a leading teacher role

"Demonstrated ability to lead and support colleagues"

Leadership isn't just a title. Panels want to see you lifting the people around you.

  • Leadership shown through action, not authority
  • Specific about what you did to help
  • Recognition from others backs it up

As a Year 4 teacher, I mentor two graduate teachers in our team. Both were struggling with behaviour in their classes and losing teaching time. I set up fortnightly half-hour catch-ups, invited them to observe my class, and together we built a shared set of routines for moving between lessons. By the end of term, both reported calmer classrooms, and our assistant principal asked me to present the routines to the whole staff.

Problem solving

Example: Graduate applying for a government graduate program

"Ability to identify problems and develop practical solutions"

Grads often think they have nothing to show. Part-time work, uni and volunteering all count.

  • Uses part-time work as real evidence
  • Finds the cause before fixing it
  • A clear before-and-after number

While studying, I worked part-time on the help desk at my university library. Students kept missing out on study rooms because many bookings were never used. I tracked bookings for two weeks and found about a third of rooms sat empty. I suggested a 15-minute check-in rule that released unclaimed rooms, and wrote a one-page guide for staff and students. After my supervisor trialled it, empty bookings fell to fewer than one in ten, and the library rolled it out across both campuses.
